Orthotics

There are many ways that modifying orthotics can help reduce your foot pain.  For example, a wedge can be applied to the inner side of the shoe insert that can be used to support a person who has a flat foot deformity. This would reduce the chances of this patient developing tendinitis.  Conversely, a wedge can be applied to the outside of the orthotic to support a person who has a problem of supination or internal rotation of the foot.   A metatarsal pad applied to the orthotics may provide a patient suffering from a Metatarsalgia, pain at the balls of the feet.  Custom orthotics are considerably more expensive than an over the counter shoe insert, however they last longer and provide more specific correction and support for the patient.   In some cases, an over the counter device may be acceptable combined with other conservative treatments such as stretching and icing.
